Equatorial origins give traditional sativa populations a growth pattern unlike that of most contemporary varieties. Plants raised from landrace sativa seeds often flower for fourteen to twenty weeks, stretch to three metres or more, and respond poorly to the abrupt light changes used in indoor cultivation. Near the equator, day length barely shifts through the year, so these plants evolved to mature slowly. Growers at higher latitudes generally need a greenhouse to bring them to completion.
